Havana: Inspiration in Every Color
There are places that inspire with their beauty, and then there are places that inspire with their complexity.
Havana is both.
From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in a world of vibrant color, layered history, and remarkable creativity. Everywhere we looked, there was inspiration—weathered facades painted in sun-faded hues, lively plazas filled with music and movement, and artists transforming everyday materials into extraordinary works of art.
The city is a masterpiece of juxtaposition. Grand architecture stands beside crumbling ruins. Vintage automobiles in brilliant colors glide past centuries-old buildings. Beauty and hardship, preservation and decay, tradition and innovation all exist side by side.
One of the highlights of our journey was visiting local artists and their studios. Their work reflected the same qualities we strive for in fine jewelry—individuality, craftsmanship, storytelling, and an unmistakable sense of place. Layers of texture, unexpected color combinations, and expressive forms seemed to appear around every corner.
As jewelers, we are constantly collecting inspiration. Sometimes it comes from a remarkable gemstone; other times from a distant destination. In Havana, inspiration was everywhere. The rich turquoise and coral tones, sun-washed pinks and yellows, hand-painted details, weathered surfaces, and vibrant street life all offered endless creative possibilities.
Even our transportation became part of the experience—a brilliantly hot pink vintage convertible that perfectly embodied the city's joyful spirit and fearless embrace of color.
What stays with us most, however, is not simply the color or the architecture. It is the resilience and warmth of the people. Despite the challenges that are evident throughout the city, there is an undeniable energy, creativity, and generosity that leaves a lasting impression.
As we said goodbye to Cuba, we left with sketchbooks full of ideas and a renewed appreciation for the power of art and craftsmanship to tell stories, preserve culture, and create beauty in unexpected places.
